"Ask" can take two objects:
1: Who are you asking?
2. What are you asking (for)?

The "who" comes before the "what."
The "what" can be an infinitive clause, and if-clause or an object.

Ask the mothers (who) their children's names. (what).
Ask your friends (who) if / whether they can help you. (what — a yes-no question)
