Asking in past

What should I use here, back in past I used to ask my students parents for my fee(tuition) they used to keep hanging me saying. They would give me altogether of 4 5 months. Can I say

Whenever I would ask them about my fee they used to say etc etc.

Or should I say

whenever I ask them.

I believe the 2nd one is incorrect because I am talking about my past activities and that is 4 years old talks. So please help me with this if you understood my broken English.

Top answer

Liton Das Whenever I would ask them about my fee they used to say etc etc. Or should I say Whenever I ask ed them. "asked" is correct and is the usual choice.

  • Liton Das Whenever I would ask them about my fee they used to say etc etc.
  • Or should I say Whenever I ask ed them.
  • "asked" is correct and is the usual choice.
  • In my opinion "would ask" is acceptable with "would" used as an indicator of regular or habitual action.
  • However, it can also seem like an error where "would" is wrongly transferred from the conclusion to the condition.
