Asking about the spelling and the pronunciation of a word

Good afternoon.

If you'd like the students to say how a word must be written and how it must be pronounced, could you say or write the word and ask the following:

'What's particular about it?' ?

Thank you.

So, what would you say to let the students point out the characteristics of a Past participle like 'tried': y becomes i; pronunciation of the sound /d/ because it comes after a vowel sound?

Id be explicit.
eg
Ho do you form the past participle of the verb 'try'?
How do you pronounce it?

No. What's special about it?

But being explicit, as Clive suggests, is a better idea.
