Asked or told

i posted this on facebook..

"i was asked not to drink alcohol by myself,repeatedly yesterday midnight".

My friend posted that the word asked should be changed to told.I was wondering which is the correct word to use? i need help.Emotion: sad

Hi, Often, no difference is intended. But here are a couple of comments. asked suggests Would you please not drink .

Often, no difference is intended. But here are a couple of comments.


asked suggests Would you please not drink . . . .

told suggests Don't drink . . .

Your sentence is ungrammatical but both I was asked and I was told are correct. I was told is more emphatic:

I was asked to do it.
I was told to do it.

By myself and the rest of your sentence don't make a lot of sense, though.
