Asked her what was wrong

Thanks very much for a nice explanation. I'd like to easily decide whether to change the word order in indirect questions by knowing that adjectives are not qualified with an article. 'She asked what the wrong was' is not possible. I know now what to do with noun phrases, too.

Like 'what's the matter?', is this also an example of an idiom used as an adjective?

She asked, 'What's the best restaurant?'

She asked what was the best restaurant.

No. That's not an idiom. It really means "the best restaurant". It's a noun phrase that can't be interpreted as an adjective.
