asked for him/ asked him

I contacted the moderator and asked for him to get involved in helping me

I tend to write the sentence as, "I contacted the moderator and asked him to get involved in helping me", and it sounds very natural.

I wonder why the preposition "for" has been used between "asked him" in the original sentence.

Please help me.
