Ask that man (for) directions

Ask that man for directions; he looks like a local.

Hi,
Is "for" optional? If not, would you tell me why in a few words? Thanks.

FOR is NOT optional in the above. You must ask someone FOR a favor, information, istructions in English. The statement without FOR - "ask that man directions" is nonsense.
