One of my first tasks is to work as a teaching assistant at an English center. This turned out to be a helpful position for me to discover how to apply teaching methodology in real classes. My choice of the internship was a less-known-center - Happy days English center. My duties were to assist foreign teachers in managing classrooms and helping learners with their misunderstandings. Also, I was assigned to teach extra classes for those assisting classes to provide more projects and activities for students to practice using English. The student ages in this center varied from 4 to 16 years old with their level fluctuate accordingly from beginner to intermediate. The communicative approach was mainly focused on by all teachers there. We concerned successful language competence comes through communicating real meaning from a real-life context. Interactive English background from the university greatly supported me during my training period there. In a 90-minute-lesson, vocabulary and grammar points were delivered to the learners inductively and deductively. In the meantime, tasks were given by questions and they worked on the given information to deal with the challenges. On observing foreign teacher’s classes, I thoroughly realized that teacher talking time and student talking time should be well adjusted to well achieve the objectives of every lesson. About methods, direct method, audio-lingual, and community English teaching were my top favorite method to apply in the class. For young learners from 4 to 8 years old, I intensively focused on the direct method which required children to produce a lot of drills. These drills I applied by creating various games and physical activities such as taping the board, hot potato, drawing, singing, doing yoga, and making cakes. In the meantime, I preferred to design lesson plans emphasized on community English teaching method for the class of intermediate level which encourage learners using their language to do presentations, make role play, create posters. This way helped them to have greater exposure to the target language. Although the class sizes and course outcomes there are quite similar to all modal classes I had practiced in the third year, I still faced some initial difficulty. My main problem was classroom management. I found it challenging to enter a class of 20 students who were so energetic and willing to share any of their ideas at all times. However, they showed a positive and obedient attitude when a clear set of class rules was applied. Those rules instructed them that excellent performance would get rewards while not so good cooperation would not. My second challenge in teaching was how to balance the instructing pace in a class whose students showed different learning capacities. It is easier for those who have the intelligence of language acquisitive. For those who are not able to keep pace with their peers, patiently I gave them extra material and exercises, encouraged them to raise their voice in the class, and try to find support from their classmates. Six months of being a teaching assistant was a great chance for me not only to practice teaching but was censorship that I can be a teacher in the future.
