In order for any work of art-whether film, literature, sculpture, or a song-to have merit, it must be understandable to most people.
my response:
Should work of art be understnadable to public to have merit? Even though many of today's works of great popularity are easy for common people to understand, an important work of art are not necessarily understandable to most people. The reasons are: first it must have long run impact on a society; second it must be insightful; third it must not be made to be understandable.
An important work of art must have lasting influence on a society. For example, although not many ancient Chinese people understand the books wrote by Confious, this serious of book such as Conficous's Word, Great Learning, serves as solid foundation of estern culture. Moreover, those works of great value can influence a society by influence only small portion of people of the society, that is the ruling class or upper class. Therefore, even a work seems abstract and confuing to most people, it still could be significant to a society through various means.
An important work of art must reflect the hidden impulse of a society. Because the hidden impuse of a society are always neglected by most people, the works revealing those impuses of a society (are probably not understandable to common people. The Black Music serves as a good example. When black music for the first time apeeared at music store in US, the selling record was not good, because no one could understand the strong feeling expressed in those songs. However, in today's research of history of balck music history, those songs are considered a mirror of like of the blacks, who lived in the coner of US society and were neclected by mainstream culture of that time.
An important work of art must not be designed to meet public's need or trend. Today, many pop music songs are designed to meet audience's need and to make profit for recoding companies. However, these songs are usually forgotten by music lovers soon, compared with those classic music written by Beethoven, Chopin, Lists.
Some might argue that if any work of art can not be understood by most people it may not have many impact to the society of the time. However, the notoriety od a work among contemporaries are only part of evaluation of the work from history perspective.
In sum, I concur that being understandable to most people might bring the work immediate fame in contemporary society. Nonetheless, it must be noted that an importance of a work of art is not determined only by contemporaries. To have merit, a work of art must also have impact on our sons and grandsons, must be based on the deep understanding of the society of the time, and must not be designed to satisfy public's need. After all, a work of art of great merit is a work of art remebered by history.
