Ask about cohesive devices

Hello everyone,

When expressing various ideas within a paragraph, I was told that you shouldn't use "First", "Secondly" as cohesive devices, so I wonder is there any phrase that I can use to replace them when I want to introduce ideas.

I hope you can help me with this problem. Thank you very much
