" Why don't you ask that question to yourself ?"
" Why don't you ask yourself that question ? "
Are both the above sentences grammatically correct ?

No, the first is wrong. There is an idiomatic preposition:

Why don't you ask that question of yourself ?

But we don't say "Let me ask a question of you"
We just say "Let me ask you a question."
Then why do we have to use of in the above sentence ?

We say it both ways, but the latter is by far the more common.
