Ask!

"When young Americans go to university at the age of 18, one of the first things many of them do (1)............ join in a fraternity or a sorority, social organizations for male and female students respectively. "

The answer here (1) is "to". But I think "one of the first things many of them do is to join........" sounds better. Because "one of the first things many of them do to join........" is a phrasal noun, not a clause.

If what I think is wrong, please tell and explain this to me. Thanks!

The blank should be filled with 'is to'. 'In' is also wrong:

...one of the first things many of them do (1) is to join a fraternity or a sorority...

You're right, there is no "in". But my teacher added this word to our exercise.

I would just say 'is join' a'.

I would probably just say "is join" but find "is to join" equally natural.
