While Kalisan was in London, he had his room-mate *in* Ashis gupta.
Should we not use as here, because Ashish is roomate?

You could say "When Kalisan was in London he had Ashish as his roommate."

I thought the same, but i read it in an english newspaper.

There is a form "Mary has a friend in John", which means that John is Mary's friend, and usually implies he is willing to help her when she needs something.
The "roommate in" sentence sounds odd to me.
