Ascend and descent with stairs

Hi

I have seen these two words (ascend, descend) with stairs. Could you please tell me how these sentences sound to your native ears?

  1. At eighty-six years old, Nora found ascending the narrow stairs of her house very hard.
  2. Ascending stairs is lot more difficult than descending them.

Thanks,

Tom

Mr. At eighty-six years old, Nora found ascending the narrow stairs of her house very hard. That is fine, but "climbing" is plainer and more usual.
