As...as question

Ok, I'm a newbie here so if I am doing anything wrong or missing anything as far as asking questions here, please let me know.
I was studying TOEIC English test and I ran into this question.

They tried to make the miniature model of the city as _______ as possible.
(a) realistic
(b) realistically
(c) reality

where I am supposed to choose the best answer among the three. So my gut feeling was, instantly, the first one. realistic. However, some other guys that disagreed with me. They chose the second option. and we couldn't figure out why it can't be one way or the other.
Can anybody explain? I really want to figure this out.

Top answer

"realistic" describes the resulting state of the model. "realistically" describes the way in which they performed the action "make". The former is what is meant.

  • "realistic" describes the resulting state of the model.
  • "realistically" describes the way in which they performed the action "make".
  • The former is what is meant.
  • In a literal interpretation, the latter would mean that the method of construction was true to life, not that the model was true to life, though in practice it would most probably be seen as an inferior way of saying the former.
