Could you please tell me if this type of construction is possible and if "of "here is particularly optional or not. Thanks.

"Of" is wrong both times.

That construction is certainly possible, and it occurs several hundred times more often without "of". Even though you will find it in print with "of" now and then, or hear it in conversation, I recommend you avoid "of" in your own writing.
