As, when, while

Hi everybody,

I would like to understand how I can distinguish these three words (more exactly conjunctions in this case if I interpreted the monolingual dictionary well) if we consider sentences like the following ones:

When Paul was trying to ring them, nobody answered the phone.

As Pat was coming downstairs, she heard a shot.
While my father was watching TV, I was swotting the English words.

Important thing: These three words were in the key of one of my grammar book. Maybe the book would like to get the best possible solution (I mean, you have to use all the conjunctions up).

I'm a Hungarian student, I can give different meanings to these conjunctions (When I translate them), but it is not enough in this case.

Thanks for your answer in advance.

In your examples, they are interchangeable. Note: I don't know the word swotting , Note: As can also mean because . We didn't order lunch as we had eaten a late breakfast.

I don't think they are completely interchangeable.

I think 'when' is the best choice for #1 amd #3, though 'while is possible. I don't think 'as' works

Thank you. Could you explain it? I only have suspicions. I thougt that in the case of 'while' and 'as' it is good if the two sentences are parallel in time (maybe there is a longer and a shorter, but the shorter is fully included in the time period of the longer).

I also thought that in the case of 'as' there is a connection between the two sentences. It seemed so 'when' is the most permi
