"The group comprises representatives from 15 political parties and a wide variety of social organizations ranging from health professions to aboriginal peoples, [as well as] independent luminaries."
Does the use of the phrase 'as well as' work well in the last clause? Should I insert a comma before it, or should I omit it? I have a vague feeling that the usage of 'as well as' is not always identical to that of the conjunction 'and.'

The sentence has other problems. On first reading, I thought that "ranging" was going to introduce a range of kinds of organizations, which it should, coming as it does right after the word. You meant that the kinds of representatives ranged, but that creates a new problem. This way it is more obvious that I am not setting two categories of people as polar opposites but rather am just trying to illustrate the wide variety of the different types of people involved.

That is something like the fix I had in mind, but there is still the problem that you now have two groups of accomplished people and an undistinguished mass of aboriginals. I know I'm not being very helpful, only criticizing, but better me than some lawyer, and you must realize that I don't really know what you're talking about.
