'As well as shaping'

In the following sentence:

We work with our clients to enhance and develop leadership and management skills, as well as shape the processes and strategic direction necessary.

I suspect that it would be easier to read if the phrase "as well as" were removed entirely and "shape" was replaced by "shaping".

Does anyone have any views on why, or are there any rules which suggest the above is incorrect?
