as well as gerund dilemma

HI all,
which of the following sentences would you deem to be correct:

"Clay-based masks remove impure substances from oily skin as well as tightening it."

OR

Clay-based masks remove impure substances from oily skin as well as tighten it.

My personal preference would be the former, "tightening", but the whole issue of "as well as" being a gerund or preposition has thrown me somewhat...

Thanks in advance
Best

Anonymous My personal preference would be the former, "tightening", but the whole issue of "as well as" being a gerund or preposition has thrown me somewhat... You may use either; we all do. Only fastidious grammarians will ask for parallel verb forms.

I wouldn't call myself fastidious but if I were your editor, I would edit tightening to
