As well as

Is starting with as well as correct and is the sentence natural?

As well as the team played in the first half, I had my doubts as to whether they could beat the opposing team.

There is a contrast in the sentence but "as well as" does not serve such a function. Although is be the word you need. Although the team played well in the first half, I had my doubts as to whether they could beat the opposing team.

And I would rather say I had (some) doubts than I had my doubts.

This can be used two ways 1) [ meaning of also ]: He has a lot of talent as well as great looks. 2) [ meaning in spite of how well ]: As well as the team played... This could also be stated as Even though the team played well...
