As was expected

"He lost the match as was expected."

Shouldn't this sentence be "He lost the match as expected" or "He lost the match as it was expected" ?
In the sentence in the present form there is no subject for the verb "expect".
Similarly, the definition of "redundant" according to most dictionares is "more than is necessary".
Shouldn't it be "more than what is necessary" ?
