AS vs WHILE

Which would you say or how would you say it?

The shirt was drying on the door handle and the shirt fell as/while I was trying to open the door.

Thank you

I wouldn't repeat the shirt , repetition isn't considered good English in many cases. The shirt was drying on the door handle and fell when I tried to open the door.

I think a part of this question was neglected --"as/while". I found this post when I was looking for the proper usage of 'As vs. While'.
For instance, one of these two usages is more correct:

He twiddled his thumbs while I scrubbed the floor.
or
He twiddled his thumbs as I scrubbed the floor.

To me there sounds like a subtle difference though current grammer
