as though

I learnt that "as if /as though" introduce a subjunctive sentence. I also see indictive sentences introduced by them. I 'd like to know what the difference is. Thanks.

People normally use as if instead. To my knowledge, they are the same. eg.

How do we know for sure whether it is a subjunctive or an indicative when you cannot tell from the sentence structure (I think) lke this? Is the intention of the writer the only factor involved?

He splurged like he had a million dollars.

They are mostly subjunctive mood, as it's a comparison with something unreal.

In some of them, the writers use the indicative forms in order to sound casual/informal.
