Is it correct to say - as they went along - or - as they went -

I read this on the internet.

Over 1000 crewmembers were needed to make these movies; The Director was flamboyant and demanding; They had all kinds of problems because the scriptwriters wrote the script as they went along; Although they had huge budgets, many things were cut back due to budget constraints.

As a word of warning, the film was shot with a teeny budget and they wrote the script as they went - so it's very stream-of-consciousness in places.
