"As + surge + render" issue

Hi,

1) can we omit the "as" in the following sentence? If so, would it change the meaning of the sentence?

In a perfect world the next generation of artists would strive to become just (as) half as good as bands like R.E.M.

2) can the word "increase" be replaced with "surge" in the following?

A sudden increase/surge in oil prices has caused many problems.

3) does the word "render" mean the same as "make" and "express"?
The lost match rendered/made him feel unhappy.
He has expressed/rendered great concern over the progress of the situation.

Thank you in advance!
