As soon as vs when

Hi,

Sometimes 'as soon as' and 'when' seem to have the same meaning, while in other cases they suggest different meanings, though often small.

I have two questions: first,do the following pairs have different meanings?
If so, does the same interpretation apply in case the past perfect is used in the time clause?

'When he stopped speaking, silence prevailed.'
'As soon as he stopped speaking, silence prevailed.'

'When the candles were blown out, total darkness fell.'
'As soon as the candles were blown out, total darkness fell.'

Which is to be preferred in traditional grammar, using the past perfect or the simple past? Ie, 'As soon as he had stopped/stopped speaking, silence prevailed.'
