"as", "so" or "that"?

Hello!

I have picked these three sentences and I would like to ask you which one(s) you think is/are correct:

1) If you had not been there, it would not have been as funny.

2) If you had not been there, it would not have been so funny.

3) If you had not been there, it would not have been that funny.

Please tell me the difference in meaning Emotion: wink

Thank you so much in advance!

They are all correct. The last one is different in that it must refer to earlier context tentatively quantifying the funniness.

Isn't there some of that quality to the first statement also? It seems to trigger the relativity question.....

as funny as what? ........whereas the second has some absoluteness on the funny scale: SO funny.

Not necessarily; that's why I said that the 3rd one is different in that it must refer to outside context. For #1 and #2, you are reading in possible content that others do not necessarily read.

But is #1 even possible? Can you say "..., it would not have been AS funny"?

As funny as what?

I always thought you had to use this "as...as" construction, i.e. in my opinion a second "as + adjective" is missing.

What do you think about that?

It would not have been as/so funny if you had not been there [as it was because you were there]. -- All of that is included in the sentence meaning.
