As proven / as can be proven

Hi,

Background:
Someone suggests sentence 1 is correct.

However, when i read a dictionary, it suggests only sentence 2 is correct.
Please see the 14th definiation in http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/as for the usage of "as" in sentence 2.

Question:
1) If sentence 1 is correct, can you tell me which definion in the above link is?
2) If both sentences correct, which sentence is less odd?

Sentence1:
I am good at maths, as proven by my academic achievements.
Sentence2:
I am good at maths, as can be proven by my academic achievements.

Thanks

They're both fine by me. "As" is the same in both versions. Sentence 1 may be rendered as "as is proven" So the difference between your sentences is the difference between what is and what can be.

  • They're both fine by me.
  • "As" is the same in both versions.
  • Sentence 1 may be rendered as "as is proven" So the difference between your sentences is the difference between what is and what can be.
  • I vote for definition 4, adverb, in the manner.
  • Of course, you can't use definition 14 (pronoun) for sentence 1 if you don't have a verb.
