As of today

Need to formulate a sentence but am not sure if it sounds well:

"As of today he was awarded licence to practice medicine as a physician."

"was awarded" and " as of today" are these times compatible?

Thank you!

Hi,
Need to formulate a sentence but am not sure if it sounds well:

"As of today he was awarded licence to practice medicine as a physician."

"was awarded" and " as of today" are these times compatible?
Better is

"Today he was awarded his licence to practice medicine (as a physician)."
