as much heat as does all the gases in the atmosphere.

This is a sentence in an exercise on "error correction" from a textbook.

The top layer of the ocean stores as much heat as does all the gases in the atmosphere.

The answer here is "does". I am wondering about the correction.
Is this correct? "does" is omitted.

Thanks.
