As much as vs although

a) As much as I respect him, I still have to disagree with him on this point.

b) Although I respect him, I still have to disagree with him on this point.

Could you tell me whether there exists any difference of nuance or meaning between a) and b)? Thanks in advance!

I don't think any difference in the meaning of those two sentences can be reliably identified (I mean "reliably" in the sense that native speakers would generally agree on the difference).

I'd say that the idiom "as much as" is in competition with "though" and "although", the former being slightly more informal.

"Even though" would also be possible.

There's no real difference between any of them.
