As much as

Are these sentences correct:

1) As much as she had mellowed down, her daughter had become fiery-tempered.
2) For as much as she had mellowed down, her daughter had become fiery-tempered.

The second one doesn't sound correct to me, unless 'for' is taken to mean 'because'.
