As much as 12 times VS. 12 times as much as

by as much as 12 times the previous year's number VS. by 12 times as much as the previous year's number

I have seen the first one recently but I have used the second pattern so far so I was wondering if 12 times can be put before and after as like that and there is no meaning difference between them or either of them is correct, if so, which one is correct?

Thank you so much as usual in advance!

The second one sounds clumsy to me; I much prefer the first, which I think is the usual. However, the main problem may be 'much' + 'number'. by as much as 12 times the previous year VS by 12 times as much as the previous year That seems to make them more equivalent in naturalness.
