As long as vs until

Are both natural?

I won’t go to the police as long as I don’t know for sure he did it.

I won’t go to the police until I know for sure he did it.

Thanks

The two sentences are similar in meaning but different in tone. The first sentence means you won't go to the police, and the only thing that would make you go to the police is if you get information that definitely implicates the person. The implication here is that you are just going to wait - and you are okay with just doing nothing - and only definite information that implicates the person will finally make you go to the police.

  • This sentence is grammatical but difficult to understand because you have a double negative construction: "won't" and "don't".
  • You would rarely hear something like this due to the double negative and the complex logic.
