The red part is confusing to me.
I say to myself that only 2 is correct. We need article "the" to show that we are talking about someone known "an assistant professor ....."

Any guidance?

One native English speaker in one other forum said to me that if I add "as" for the beginning of option C it would be correct.

She meant: D. as explained by the lead author Paul Piff

Possible grammatically, but not very likely in real life. The text writer should be more specific.
