As large

"They tried to put distance between themselves so that their conflicts would not seem as large."
Does "would" in this sentence mean "will" but in the past?
And do they mean by "...would not seem as large as if they didn't put distance...?

In a sense, yes it is the past tense of will. The sentence basically means that they are distancing themselves away from each other so that they don't have big conflicts/arguments.
