"as it turned out" – could it mean "I didn't expect that..."

I got curious about what the grammar rules behind my first language were. So, I did some investigations on the internet and as it turned out, its rules were more complicated than I had originally thought.

Am I using "as it turned out" correctly?
I can interpret it as "I found out and didn't expect that..."
