I have tried to take much time and interpreted the expression "as it did" in the following statement, yet have failed to figure it out:

This new food security was a key element in the development of modern civilization, leading "as it did" to more stable societies in which part of the population could engage in nonagricultural actives, such as trade and commerce.

Please help.

It is used for emphasis. It means "which it (definitely) did (lead to more stable societies, etc.)"
