"as ir it did" or "as if it were"

Here is a multiple choice :

The temple has been rebuilt so that it looks as it ___ in the 18th century.

A. was B. were C. used to be D. did

The answer is : did

My question is:

#1. After "as", it seems that "if" is left out; otherwise, the sentence doesn't make sense. Right?

#2. I think "were" is also correct. meaning "The temple has been rebuilt so that it looks as if it were built in the 18th century".

#3. In my opinion, the best expression should be: The temple has been rebuilt so that it looks as if it had been in the 18th century". What do you think?

The easiest way of expressing the required meaning is the one given as the answer: "so that it looks as it did in the 18th century".

1. "so that it looks as if it did in the 18th century" is incorrect, if that's what you're asking.

2. "so that it looks as it were in the 18th century" is incorrect. "so that it looks as it was in the 18th century

No. as = the same way that. It looks [the same way that / as] it [looked / did] in the 18th century.
