as if/as though

Hi from Türkiye,

1. They treat me as if I were a child.

2. They treated me as if I were a child.

3. They treated me as if I had been a child.

Which ones are correct? Actually 2 or 3?

They are all correct to my ear.
The third one is a bit strange but possible.

In Turkey, one of the English grammar book written by Turks says the second one is true.

At the same time the another book says it is the third one that is correct. Really I had to know this , thanks.

Without a doubt # 2 is the correct. # 1 is also correct if it’s taken as a general statement rather a description of how you were treated in recent past.

“As if I were” does not necessarily express “past time”, it’s just an expression.

# 3 sounded cumbersome to my ears….

When you say that "They treated me as if I were a child" is true, you are saying that some people really did treat you that way. You are agreeing with the contents -- the meaning -- of the sentence. This
