As if + Past

Hello, dear Gurus of English!

Is the sentence below OK, using Past Tense "met" instead of "had met", because "before" is used to reveal the time sequence?

She looked at me as if we never met before.

This is a looser (I would say inferior) way of saying "She looked at me as if we had never met before." You may hear sentences such as this used, but in careful English I would recommend the full form.
