Isn't the sentence above ungrammatical?

Doesn't the "were" have to be replaced with "was"?

As many grammar books are saying that 'were' is used to refer to present events, as in "I wish I were a bird", so have I been thinking.

Both were and was could be used in your sentence without harming the intended meaning.

I see it as a matter of register: one would use were if one wanted to use a higher register.
