Charley looked as if he were not entirely sure that the question would would keep so long.

-- why, really he looked as if he was afraid I would bite him.

After as if, was and were seem to be in free variation. Some people think that was connotes a more certain, more real comparison. That could be, but I've never noticed any really obvious difference.
