"As if" commas.

The words "as if" really puzzle me when writing, because it seems really ambiguous to me most of the time as to whether a comma should come before them or not. I usually end up going with what feels right. Take this sentence here as an example:

She suddenly turns to him as if something truly grand just occurred to her.

Should there be a comma before "as if" there, or does it even matter either way? It seems pretty smooth-flowing as is. Are there any strict guidelines on the matter?
