as if is difficult to fully understand.
I wish to be enlightened here.
1. I feel as if it was yesterday that I touched down in the Guangzhou airport.
....... How about "was" is replaced by "had been"?
2. Thirty seconds after the crash; the airport looks as if it had been bombed.
...... How about "had been" is replaced by "was"?

In my opinion, both tenses, i.e., simple past and past perfect, can be used in those sentences. "was" and "had been" indicate the past unreality/
