As if

Which one of the sentences is grammatically correct?
"He has been playing well lately as if he had been reborn." Or
"He has been playing well lately as if he has been reborn."
I used the first sentence in my this morning conversation I had with my coworker, but I wasn't quite sure if I had said it correctly. I am not a native English speaker.

I appreciate you taking you time to answer this question.
