as if

I have a big problem and don't know how to do. I have a sentence. It is: The room was too small that i felt as if i were in a lift. I think that the right sentence is .....i had been in a lift because he/she was in a small room(it is the fact) so it can't be"were" here, right? I don't know why so i need your help. Could you help me to analyse and explain? thank you in advance

The fact is that you're not in a lift, so the proposition is hypothetical. Use the subjunctive "were." (It is NOT past tense.)
