As if

1. So far, it has appeared as if most classes we have seen do not have a superclass. (Is 'do' incorrect here? I should use past tense for 'as if'' to make the statement false?)

2. So far, it has appeared as if most classes we have seen did not have a superclass.

Thanks.

Hello Jack I can't understand the meaning of 'most classes do not have a superclass'. What do you mean by 'a superclass'? As far as I know, a superclass is a term used in biological taxonomy to mean a category blow a division but above a class.

1. He behaved as if it were nothing to be shamed of. (Why isn't this one using past perfect? This is a past tense setence? What would it mean if past perfect was used compared to just past?)

2. He holds his haead forward as if he has hit it too often on low doorways. (How come I can use present perfect here? Shouldn't this be 'if he hit it too often..' ?)

Hello Paco2004,

I guess Jack is studying an object oriented programming language, probably JAVA. In terms of Java language, a class is nothing but a text file that contains sequence of Java statements. According to the inhertiance theory of object oriented programming, a child class/subclass inherits/extends a superclass/parent class, and the child class will inherit all properties of pa

Hello Krish

Thank you for the info. If 'superclass' is used that way, I think we might say "most of the classes we have seen do not belong to the category of superclasses" instead of "most classes we have seen do not have a superclasses". Though I don’t know much about IT, I feel the languages used in that field use common English words in peculiar ways. So I think sentences extracted fr

"as if" is equivalent to "that", so why would the past be required?

So far, it [appears / has appeared] [that / as if] most classes we have seen do not have a superclass.

"to seem as if" has the same properties as "to appear as if".
