As If

http://www.learnenglish.org.uk/grammar/archive/as_if.html

After reading that page. I got a little bit confused.

Are these correct? What do they mean?
1. He is standing next to that thing like it is a car.
2. He is standing next to that thing like it was a car. (Is this correct with 'was'? It sounds odd? It makes me feel like that thing was a car in the past?)

3. He is standing next to that thing as if it was a car. (It is not a car?)
4. He is standing next to that thing as if it is a car. (It is a car?)

Thanks.
